Aleksander Ceferin rules out standing against Gianni Infantino for FIFA presidency | OneFootball

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says he will not stand against Gianni Infantino in next March’s FIFA presidential election. According to L'Équipe, the Slovenian confirmed he will not be a candidate.

Ceferin remains a prominent critic of the current FIFA chief. The pair have not spoken since the row over Infantino’s now-abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.

He said he is not interested in the presidency, and that he enjoys working at UEFA despite his term ending in 2027. He argued that his credibility as an opponent carries more weight if he is not seeking the job.

The privatisation project, later dropped, has led to a loss of support for Infantino. UEFA, led by Ceferin, still threatens to boycott all FIFA competitions despite the U-turn.

Looking to 2027, Ceferin outlined two possibilities. Either Infantino realises he lacks the backing needed for re-election, or he runs, in which case Ceferin believes a rival candidate will emerge, though he does not yet know who.
