Álex Baena has shut his X account, at least temporarily, amid a wave of online abuse.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Atlético de Madrid midfielder deactivated his X profile and limited comments on Instagram.
Atlético reached the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory at Riazor. Baena was withdrawn in the 58th minute for Thiago Almada, who soon struck a direct free-kick.
This season he has played 892 minutes across 17 matches, scoring two and assisting one. After injury, his share of minutes rose from 31.7% to nearly 40% with recent continuity.
Signed from Villarreal for 42 million euros in the summer, injuries have curtailed his rhythm. Before a setback at Camp Nou against Barcelona, Diego Simeone saw him as a key piece and he had put Atlético ahead with a superb goal. He could not continue, as happened to Johnny Cardoso early and to Giménez late.
Recent performances have not fully convinced. He produced 7 goals and 10 assists in 33 games last season. The first half in La Coruña prompted some supporters to turn on him on social media, in unacceptable fashion.
Baena remains focused on Atlético de Madrid and is seeking to recover his best version, physically and mentally.
