The former U19 head coach has been appointed assistant coach of the first team, signing a contract until 30 June 2029.
Alex Meier has been named first-team assistant coach and joins the coaching staff led by new head coach Adi Hütter, and also includes assistant coaches Christian Peintinger and Klaus Schmidt, as well as goalkeeper coach Jan Zimmermann. Meier has been given a three-year contract until 2029.
After a 14-year playing career with the Eagles, Meier has gained a range of experience as a coach in the club’s youth academy since 2020. In the 2022/23 season he worked as an assistant coach of the U21 team, before taking over the U16s as head coach in 2023 and then being promoted to U19 boss in 2025. The 43-year-old led the U19s to the round of 16 of the UEFA Youth League.
At the same time, Meier earned his A-licence, one of the highest coaching licences issued by the German Football Association (DFB), and regularly observed first-team training sessions during his early years in the academy in particular.
Meier was also part of the first team’s interim coaching staff for around two weeks at the start of this year.
