Alex Mowatt completes Derby move from West Brom for fee understood to exceed £600,000 | OneFootball

Alex Mowatt has joined Derby County from West Bromwich Albion on a two-year contract. The 31-year-old’s fee is undisclosed, though it is understood to be a little over £600,000.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Albion rejected an initial offer before agreeing terms, with Mowatt completing a medical in the east Midlands.

Mowatt spent five seasons at The Hawthorns, including one loan at Middlesbrough, making 170 appearances. He started under head coach James Morrison in last weekend’s EFL Cup tie at Rotherham.

Derby and head coach John Eustace had long admired the Yorkshireman, firming up interest this week on the eve of the Championship season. Mowatt had entered the final year of his Albion deal and was among the club’s higher earners, so moving him on eased the wage bill.

He was one of five senior central midfielders, and with his contract status, Albion’s hierarchy were content to sanction the sale. The timing is not ideal for Morrison, coming on the eve of Saturday’s trip to Norwich City.

Albion are confident Ousmane Diakite and Jayson Molumby, plus new arrivals Felix Horn Myhre and Rabby Nzingoula, provide sufficient depth, with Isaac Price and Harry Whitwell also able to cover. A late midfield signing is not ruled out if the price is right, but a winger remains the priority. They may also seek extra firepower before the one September deadline, while the only natural right-back cover for new signing Nolan Galves is academy prospect Alex Williams.
