Young Lion could win his first senior cap next week
Alex Scott paid tribute to his Bournemouth team-mates after he was called up to the England senior squad for the very first time.
The midfielder, 22, has been selected by Thomas Tuchel for the Three Lions’ final two World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania next week.
The former Bristol City man has been in excellent form for Andoni Iraola’s high-flying Cherries this term, and the Dorset side find themselves fifth in the Premier League table.
Scott has played in all 10 of Bournemouth’s league fixtures this season, scoring once against Brighton in a 2-1 win.
Of those games, he has started all but one of them, playing in the Cherries’ double pivot of Iraola’s 4-2-3-1 shape.
Scott’s form has now earned him a senior call-up, with the youngster having featured at every youth level of international football.
He was a regular starter in the Young Lions’ Under-21 European Championship defence in Slovakia, starting five of the six games, including the 3-2 win over Germany in the final.
In a video posted on Bournemouth’s social media channels, Scott was applauded and cheered by his team-mates when the news broke.
Encouraged to speak in front of the players, the midfielder said: “My brothers, I just wanted to say thank you for everything.
“Obviously it’s been a good season so far. A very proud moment for me, and I can’t wait. I want to say thank you to all of you for making it happen.”
Both Scott’s managers - Iraola and Tuchel - were full of praise for the young star.
“He had an excellent Euros,” Tuchel said.
“He won the title; he did an excellent job in midfield with Elliot Anderson, who is now a regular starter for us. He was very impressive, but then he took another big step by becoming a regular starter for Bournemouth, and they are in the top third of the league, overperforming constantly.
“He puts the intensity in, and gets his minute. We thought it was a perfect time to [call him up] and get to know him and to see what he can bring to our team.”
Iraola was asked about Scott’s call-up in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Cherries’ weekend clash with Aston Villa.
“I am very pleased for him,” the Spaniard said.
“He has been playing very well. A good performance too with the under-21s was very valuable.”
