Alexander Medina has been confirmed as Estudiantes de La Plata's new head coach after Eduardo Domínguez left for Atlético Mineiro. He takes charge immediately with the brief of maintaining the side’s competitiveness in the Torneo Apertura.
According to SuperDepor.com, the Uruguayan will oversee his first training session on Sunday afternoon. The plan is for him to make his debut on Wednesday 25 February at 19.30 against Newell’s in Rosario, in the seventh round.
Domínguez’s exit triggered an urgent search and accelerated talks inside the club. After several days of analysis and internal discussions, Medina emerged as the definitive choice.
He returns to the dugout after his most recent spell at Talleres de Córdoba, which ended in April last year. That tenure included winning the Supercopa Internacional against River, the Córdoba side’s second official title.
During the process, directors assessed multiple profiles, with Martín Demichelis initially heading the list and Martín Palermo also considered. Neither gathered full consensus, so the club prioritised recent experience in Argentine football and quick adaptation to the squad.
Two factors proved decisive. Sporting director Marcos Angeleri strongly backed the Cacique, and positive references arrived from within the game, including support from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who worked with Medina at Nacional and praised his group management.
Medina steps in during a transitional phase for Estudiantes, who seek to extend recent success at home and abroad without deep structural change. He will sign his contract on Sunday and link up with the first team immediately.
