The former Celtic left-back has produced an impressive attacking return throughout the year and currently boasts more goal contributions than any other player in Brazil.

His latest contribution arrived in Thursday’s Copa do Brasil clash with Corinthians, where Internacional secured their place in the quarter-finals following a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory.

Bernabei played a decisive role in the tie, producing a spectacular second-half finish which has quickly become one of the defining moments of his excellent season.

Picking up possession from a tight angle, the Argentine unleashed a thunderous effort beyond goalkeeper Hugo Souza before racing towards the travelling Internacional support to celebrate.

Performances of that standard have earned Bernabei significant praise in Brazil, with sections of the media now placing him among the country’s best-performing players.

His resurgence has also resulted in a considerable increase in his market value after a difficult spell in Scottish football.

Celtic won the race for Bernabei’s signature in 2022 despite competition from elsewhere in Europe, paying around £4.5million to bring the defender to Glasgow from Argentina.

However, regular first-team football proved difficult to come by as Greg Taylor remained the preferred option on the left side of Celtic’s defence.

Bernabei’s direct, attack-minded approach never quite provided the same level of control Taylor offered within Celtic’s system, while well-documented issues away from the pitch also complicated his time at the Hoops.

The defender managed only one competitive goal for the Hoops, scoring during an away victory over Ross County.

There appeared to be the possibility of a fresh opportunity when Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic, with Bernabei finding the net twice during the Irishman’s first pre-season back at the club.

That revival ultimately failed to materialise, though, with the Argentine quickly slipping out of Rodgers’ plans before eventually returning to South America.
