The 22-year-old former Chelsea prospect moved to Albion for £1.2million last term and struggled for regular action. He made 15 appearances, only eight of them Championship starts.

Signed with right-back in mind following Darnell Furlong’s exit, he had made his name at centre-back at Chelsea. It is understood he wants to prove himself centrally with the League One O’s.

His standout display came in the middle against Southampton in the spring. It is believed he remains part of Albion’s future and is under contract until 2029.

Orient finished 20th in League One last season, narrowly avoiding relegation. They began this season by knocking new third-tier rivals Oxford, relegated from the Championship, out of the EFL Cup first round at Brisbane Road last weekend.

Gilchrist could debut in Saturday’s League One curtain-raiser at another club coming down from the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday. Orient host Walsall in the second round this month.
