Leeds United Women progressed to the FA Women’s National League Cup Second Round following a 2-1 win away at Hull City Ladies this afternoon.
An eighth-minute opener from Ellie White was cancelled out by the hosts early in the second half, before Alice Hughes scored the match-winning goal ten minutes before the full-time whistle.
After the game, winning goalscorer Hughes said: “I’m buzzing, I can’t really describe it!
“I think that’s two massive wins on the bounce against top opposition, especially today with Hull being the league above, so you can’t beat it and you can’t beat a last-minute win!"
On the gained momentum: “I think that’s what football seasons are all about to be honest with you – it’s that momentum.
“The resilience we’ve shown in the last two games has been massive, and I think that’s something maybe we’ve been lacking a little bit before, so I think the performances as well as the wins are really going to take us forward into next week’s FA Cup.
“It’s really important, especially against top opposition,” Hughes added on the quick start. “I think we were really established and really calm, and I don’t think there was any panic amongst the team and I think that really helped settle anything further we might have felt.
“We want to win every single game we play, whether it’s cup, whether it’s league – we want to compete and we want to win, we are always going to benefit from a cup run, again, it’s that momentum.”
On next weekend: “I can’t wait. It’s the FA Cup – it’s what you always want to play in, what you dream of as a kid.
“We can’t take any team lightly so we’ll do our homework, do our prep, and then we’ll enter next Sunday hopefully with a win.”
