Ranking the Championship sides based on how many big chances they've missed so far this season

The Championship has reached the first major point of the season with Swansea City leading the way ahead of the first international break of 2026/27.

The Welsh outfit will get to enjoy three weeks in first place before the action resumes in October, with the team earning 17 points from their opening eight games.

West Ham and Middlesbrough are both right behind, while the likes of Wolves and West Brom are also within touching distance.

It is set to be a fiercely competitive promotion battle, but it’s the Hammers who have found the back of the net most frequently so far, scoring 22 times compared to Swansea’s 13 and Boro’s 16.

Other high scorers include Southampton with 19 and Norwich City with 16, while Lincoln City, Charlton Athletic, Derby County and Watford all have the fewest with seven each.

However, they have scored only seven goals in the league and have generated an expected goals (xG) of 5.9.

However, they have only generated an xG of 8.6, scoring a total of 10 goals, so it’s evident that the team must create more to maintain their current level of form longer-term.

Stoke City under Mark Robins will be hoping to compete for a play-off place this season, and it’s been a positive start to that endeavour, with the team seventh going into the break.

The Potters have missed just a total of six big chances from their first eight games, scoring 13 times, but have generated an xG of 8.4, so this effectiveness in front of goal may not be a true reflection of the quality of chances being created this season.
