From compact, old-fashioned grounds where supporters are almost on top of the pitch to huge former Premier League arenas capable of hosting more than 30,000 fans, there is enormous variety across the 24 clubs in the 2026/27 season.

The arrival of West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City, and Lincoln City only adds further character to an already diverse collection of venues. But which grounds provide the toughest away days?

Taking into account atmosphere, crowd noise, hostility, history, and the general feeling of intimidation, here is how every Championship stadium ranks from least to most intimidating in the current campaign.

24 ? ? Blackburn Rovers – Ewood Park

Ewood Park has history and has staged some huge matches, but intimidation is more about the present than reputation. Crowds of Blackburn Rovers fans can be relatively modest for a stadium of its size, meaning the ground can often feel sparse. There will be bigger occasions, but on an average Championship weekend, it is difficult to rank Rovers much higher.

23 ? ? Swansea City – Swansea.com Stadium

Swansea City can produce a good atmosphere, particularly when momentum is behind the team, but the Swansea.com Stadium has rarely felt like one of the Championship's truly intimidating away days. Its open, modern design does not help concentrate the noise, and there are simply several grounds in the division where visiting teams are likely to feel greater pressure.

22 ? ? Wrexham – Racecourse Ground

The Racecourse Ground will undoubtedly be one of the Championship's most interesting destinations, but Wrexham's remarkable rise has arguably changed the feel of attending games. There are some loyal, long-term fans but it is increasingly something of a tourist attraction, with the club's global profile bringing plenty of outside interest. The atmosphere can be lively, but intimidation is another matter.

21 ? ? Stoke City – bet365 Stadium

There was once an old saying that nobody wanted to go to Stoke on a cold, wet night, but the bet365 Stadium simply does not carry quite the same fear factor these days. The Potters remain a big club with loyal support, yet recent struggles have diminished the intimidating aura that once made the ground so notoriously difficult. Championship points are not always easy to come by for the Potters at home.

20 ? ? Bristol City – Ashton Gate

Ashton Gate is a smart stadium with a passionate fanbase, but it does not consistently produce the hostility associated with the Championship's most difficult away days. Bristol City can make it lively when there is plenty at stake, although the atmosphere rarely feels suffocating. A respectable ground, certainly, but not one that opponents will particularly dread visiting.

19 ? ? Preston North End – Deepdale

Deepdale's traditional character gives Preston North End a slight edge over several grounds below them, and it can become a difficult place when the hosts are performing well. However, the atmosphere does not always match the stadium's history. Preston are capable of making home advantage count, but there are more consistently intimidating crowds elsewhere in the division.

18 ? ? Watford – Vicarage Road

Vicarage Road is compact enough to create a decent atmosphere, but Watford have not always generated the sort of sustained intensity that makes opponents genuinely dread the visit. The Hornets can raise their game for bigger fixtures, although there is little evidence that the ground consistently creates an intimidating environment across a full season.

17 ? ? Bolton Wanderers – Toughsheet Community Stadium

As a newly-promoted side, Bolton cannot realistically be placed too high, particularly before seeing how they adapt to the Championship. Their home form will nevertheless be hugely important if they are to survive. With a sizeable fanbase and a stadium capable of generating noise for major fixtures, the Toughsheet should prove to be a fairly useful weapon this season.

16 ? ? Lincoln City – Sincil Bank

Lincoln's arrival in the Championship is a tremendous achievement, but Sincil Bank is an intimidating ground in this particular field due to the loud atmosphere they generate. The Imps will be hoping to make home advantage count during their battle to establish themselves, but its relatively small size and the quality of the team somewhat put it behind some of the other competition.

15 ? ? Cardiff City – Cardiff City Stadium
