That is up and down the leagues and beyond the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, with supporters turning up in huge numbers week after week, whether that be in the Championship, League One, League Two, or even further down into the National League — where crowds and engagement have risen significantly in recent years.

The spectacle of lower-league football has improved massively as a result. There are better atmospheres, alongside increased investment, growing media coverage, and the sheer unpredictability of the EFL remains. They have all contributed to a product that supporters continue to buy into.

Clubs are no longer relying solely on history or loyalty alone; many are offering genuinely entertaining football and outstanding matchday experiences. In divisions like League One specifically, packed stadiums can often make the difference between success and failure.

Hostile away environments and intense home atmospheres frequently provide teams with an extra edge across a long and gruelling campaign. A strong crowd behind a side can quickly turn stadiums into fortresses, while there are also some huge clubs in the third tier that consistently draw in bigger crowds.

For some clubs, the number of spectators only heightens the pressure on clubs desperate to escape the division. Financially and competitively, League One can become difficult to stagnate in, which is why attendances and supporter backing remain such an important factor in any promotion push.

Here, we have looked at Transfermarkt's attendance figures for League One in 2025/26 and ranked each team from the worst to the best in terms of support this season. We have ranked as a percentage of the stadium's capacity.

24 ? ? Port Vale - 38.3%

Despite returning to League One, Vale Park was far from full on a regular basis throughout 2025/26. A difficult campaign and inconsistent form likely contributed, though there remains a loyal core support at Port Vale capable of creating a strong atmosphere when optimism around the club is higher.

23 ? ? Wigan Athletic - 39.3%

Considering the size of the DW Stadium, Wigan Athletic's attendance percentage was always likely to suffer somewhat. The Latics still possess a sizeable fanbase, but years of turbulence and instability have clearly impacted crowd numbers, even with signs of improvement beginning to emerge on the pitch.

22 ? ? Barnsley - 46.4%

Oakwell remains one of League One’s more traditional grounds, but Barnsley supporters endured another frustrating season. The fanbase still travels exceptionally well away from home, though attendances at home have not quite reflected the standards supporters expect from a club with Championship ambitions.

21 ? ? Reading - 50.5%

Given everything Reading supporters have been through in recent years, a 50.5% occupancy rate is understandable. The Select Car Leasing Stadium can feel vast in League One, but there are signs the fanbase is reconnecting following much-needed stability and renewed optimism around the club’s future.

20 ? ? Peterborough United - 53.1%

Peterborough United continue to be one of League One’s most entertaining sides, but attendance levels at the Weston Homes Stadium remain fairly modest. Strong recruitment and exciting football help attract supporters, although the club still has room to grow its regular home backing moving forward.

19 ? ? Wycombe Wanderers - 54.8%

Wycombe Wanderers' steady progress as a club has continued in recent years, though Adams Park was only just over half full on average. The Chairboys remain a well-run outfit punching above their weight, and their fanbase has maintained strong support relative to the club’s overall size.

18 ? ? Cardiff City - 58.8%

For a club of Cardiff City's stature, and after winning automatic promotion, a sub-60% occupancy figure underlines the disappointment surrounding their League One status. The Bluebirds still drew mediocre crowds, but supporters understandably expect far more given the club’s recent Premier League history but bouncing back immediately should help next term.

17 ? ? Blackpool - 59.2%

Bloomfield Road can still generate an excellent atmosphere when Blackpool are pushing near the top end of the table. However, poor performances at the start of the campaign and lingering frustration from previous years likely impacted occupancy levels slightly, despite the Seasiders remaining one of the division’s bigger names.

16 ? ? Doncaster Rovers - 59.6%

The Eco-Power Stadium’s size means Doncaster Rovers' percentage was always going to be difficult to inflate significantly. Nevertheless, there were encouraging signs of growing engagement across 2025/26 as supporters bought into the club’s direction after promotion – and with hopes of establishing themselves higher up the division again.

15 ? ? Burton Albion - 59.8%

Burton Albion continue to outperform expectations as a relatively small club operating in League One. The Pirelli Stadium may not boast huge crowds, but nearly 60% occupancy reflects solid backing from a fanbase that has witnessed remarkable progress over the last decade and beyond.
