‘All came from…’ – Journalist pinpoints costly Liverpool lapse shortly before Forest goal | OneFootball

One Liverpool player was called out for a costly lapse shortly before Nottingham Forest’s second goal at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

With 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Oliver Glasner’s team took the lead for the second time on the day as Morgan Gibbs-White converted a penalty that Clinton Morrison felt was ‘harsh’ on the home side.

The spot kick was awarded after Alisson Becker was adjudged to have fouled Neco Williams inside the box, with the Forest full-back the fastest to react to a throw-in taken quickly by Liam Delap.

Frimpong blamed for ‘switching off’ just before penalty

Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle observed that the passage of play which led to the penalty incident stemmed from a lapse in concentration by Jeremie Frimpong, who allowed Williams to run off him and then was too slow to react as the throw-in was taken.

The reporter posted on X: ‘Forest win a penalty as Williams is downed by Alisson. All came from Frimpong switching off at throw.’

Liverpool need Frimpong to be more switched on defensively

Having been criticised by Doyle over his performance at Newcastle last weekend, Liverpool’s number 30 didn’t cover himself in glory either with the incident from which Forest won their penalty today.

It was a moment of inattention which raises fresh concerns over the defensive ability of the 25-year-old, whose innate desire to burst forward and influence the game further up the pitch can sometimes see him abdicate his core right-back duties.

The journalist wasn’t impressed by Frimpong’s overall performance today as he gave the Dutchman a lowly 4/10 in his post-match player ratings for the Liverpool Echo, saying that he was ‘erratic defensively’ and pointing to how he ‘lost Williams’ just before the spot kick was awarded.

Liverpool’s number 30 was deprived of an assist for Florian Wirtz after being called offside in the build-up to the German’s disallowed first-half goal, but while the endeavour was there, the quality of his crossing left plenty to be desired – none of the four that he attempted found a teammate (Sofascore).

We suspect that Iraola will have a quiet word with the 25-year-old over how he switched off at the throw-in which led to Forest’s penalty, as he can’t afford too many repeats of that costly moment.
