The two sides haven’t had much to debate with each other for some time, as they have competed in different divisions since 2018 when Wanderers were promoted to the Premier League.

However, that all changed when Wolves decided to part ways with Vítor Pereira following a dismal start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

The top flight outfit decided that Edwards was the man they wanted to take over, despite the fact that he was already employed by Middlesbrough and was only months into a three-year contract on Teesside.

Boro had started the season excellently under the former Luton Town manager, climbing up towards the top of the Championship and spending a number of weeks as the league leaders before Coventry City fully hit their stride.

Despite these differing fortunes between the two clubs, Edwards decided to make the move, swapping Middlesbrough for Wolves and subsequently infuriating the Riverside faithful.

Following Edwards’ switch, many topics were debated, such as whether he had made the correct choice due to Wolves’ relegation-threatened situation and how Middlesbrough could’ve been the better bet for his long-term future.

Former Manchester United, Birmingham City, West Brom and Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has now weighed in on that conversation and has made a bold claim whilst doing so.

When asked which club between Middlesbrough and Wolves were bigger on the Fozcast, Foster stated: “Oh, I’m going to say Middlesbrough all day long. Middlesbrough all day long. Name some historic Wolves players; they don’t exist.”

The shot-stopper made almost 500 career appearances, winning the Premier League twice and the League Cup three times, most notably with Birmingham City in 2011 when they defied the odds to beat Arsenal.

It can be heavily debated over which club is historically bigger between Wolves and Middlesbrough.

Wanderers have been top flight champions on three occasions, as well as FA Cup Winners four times, alongside two League Cups. However, the last of those trophies came in 1980.

Boro have challenged for many more major honours in their recent history, winning the League Cup in 2004 whilst finishing runner-up in 1997 and 1998, reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2006 and the FA Cup final in 1997.

They are also nearly 200 points ahead of Wolves in the all-time Premier League points table, despite the fact Middlesbrough haven't been in the top flight since the 16/17 season, and Wanderers have been playing in the division since 18/19 respectively.

The Riverside outfit may still feel quite sore about how their manager was stolen away from them, whilst it looked like they were in a perfect position to fight for promotion, but Foster’s comments may heal a slight piece of that heartache and evoke a wry smile from the Middlesbrough faithful.
