Despite having his 2025-26 season wrecked by a right tibial fracture, Josko Gvardiol is a key player for Manchester City, both now and in the future. The elegant defender has thrived as a member of Pep Guardiola’s squad since he signed for the club from RB Leipzig. Given that Josko Gvardiol is so important to City it was no surprise to learn that City were working on extending Josko Gvardiol’s contract with the club. Nicolò Schira has previously reported that Gvardiol was edging closer to signing a contract extension. Now a spanner in the works may have appeared. A new report indicates that Bayern Munich could move for Gvardiol this summer. It now remains to be seen what Josko Gvardiol decides to do this summer.
German publication Sport1 has reported on Bayern Munich’s interest in signing Josko Gvardiol from Manchester City this summer. Firstly, Sport1 reports that Gvardiol can see himself one day playing for Bayern Munich. Furthermore, it is also reported that the Croatian international is trying to force a departure from City this summer. The issue, as reported by Sport1, that may hinder any Bayern Munich move for Josko Gvardiol is his transfer fee. It is reported that Manchester City would demand at least €90 million to part ways with Gvardiol. Bayern believes they could sign Gvardiol from City for €75 million if they were to try and negotiate a deal for the elegant defender. Lastly, it is reported that it is unknown if Bayern would pursue such an expensive move this summer.
My first reaction to Sport1’s report is that it is hard to see Manchester City selling Josko Gvardiol this summer, especially considering how integral he is to his team. Gvardiol is a player that City can build their defence around. His ability to play either at centre-back or left-back is crucial to them. Josko Gvardiol is one of the premier young defenders in football, and is on the verge of entering the prime years of his career. Also, as mentioned above, City seem determined to tie down Josko Gvardiol on a long-term contract extension. Given that, it is hard to see Gvardiol being sold by City this summer.
However, if Josko Gvardiol wants to move to Bayern Munich as Sport1 reports that could change the equation. Manchester City rarely keep players who do not want to be at the club. Besides Bernardo Silva. If Gvardiol agitates for a move it would be up to Bayern Munich to meet City’s asking price. Whether or not they will, seems unlikely. Also, Gvardiol is contracted at City so they hold all of the cards for now.
The possibility that Josko Gvardiol could leave Manchester City now seems to exist, especially if the Croatian defender wants to one day play for Bayern Munich. The hope is that Gvardiol extends his contract with City. If he doesn’t, his future may be a topic that has the potential to drag on all summer, especially with the imminent World Cup set to delay any major transfer moves.
