Liverpool have been tipped to conduct a midfield refit this summer.

The deposed Premier League champions suffered as a result of poor form from some of their title-winning midfielder last season - leading to speculation they will be replaced.

Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara are among the candidates to enter Anfield this summer - with incoming moves sure to have a knock-on effect for the players already there.

Perhaps the biggest uncertainty surrounds Alexis Mac Allister.

Mac Allister won't sign new contract

The 27-year-old is under contract until summer 2028 and is known to be a target for Real Madrid. His father - Carlos - denied earlier this week that talks were already under way for a move to the Bernabeu.

But with no deal on the table - and little willingness to engage with talks - it would be no surprise to see the former Brighton man on the move this summer.

“Mac Allister is on Real Madrid's radar for a potential transfer in the upcoming window, which opens on July 1st,” a report in El Desmarque reads.

“Should Florentino Pérez win the presidential elections, the attacking midfielder, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, will be a target for the Madrid club.

“Sources close to the Argentine have confirmed that there are no ongoing negotiations to renew his contract with Liverpool, who are looking to streamline their squad.

“Mac Allister's departure from Liverpool could come amid the club's efforts to finance structural and financial changes. The midfielder has two years remaining on his contract, but he wouldn't be opposed to a move to La Liga, as he hasn't yet extended his contract, which would open the door to other offers.”

Mac Allister open to Madrid move

Mac Allister is currently preparing to defend his FIFA World Cup title alongside his Argentina teammates.

And Clarin in his homeland admits that moving to the Spanish capital is a prospect that appeals to the Reds’ No10 - with Atletico Madrid now also entering the running.

“Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid could be engaged in a bidding war for Mac Allister,” the report reads.

“A move to Spain is an appealing possibility for the son of the Colorado native, whose contract with the English club runs until June 2028.

“Real Madrid's interest is not new, although in recent hours Diego Simeone has also expressed interest, already thinking about next season.”

Mac Allister was very much beneath his best in the 2025/26 season - a campaign that cost Arne Slot his job as head coach.

Talks over a new deal will be difficult - considering Macca’s status as a title-winner and a senior player. But in the cold light of day Richard Hughes is unlikely to view his recent performances as worthy of a pay rise from his current £150k per week.
