Germany broke their little losing-streak of three losses in a row and beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Köln. The players were content with the performance, but they know they have a long way to go.
Here are all the comments and statements directly after Germany's win over Northern Ireland:
…about his goal and Kimmich's words before the freekick: “I don't know to be honest, I just knew I wanted to try and score from that position.”
…about the Slovakia game and the difference to tonight: “It was a catastrophe and we wanted to redeem ourselves tonight. It was a better performance tonight, we can build from here. We're happier tonight.”
…about his performances for Liverpool: “It's a different league and I have to get used to it. I want to score in the next game, but I always want that. I'm sure I'll get more comfortable as time goes on.”
…about Germany's first goal of the game: “We're a bit lucky, but our counter-pressing is good and Serge does a great job in front of goal. I want to see that from him more often.”
…about Northern Ireland's goal: “The goal we conceded was too easy. We need to block our opponents better in corners like these. The whole team has to help out.”
…about Maxmilian Beier's role in this game: “Beier isn't a classic center forward. We weren't able to hold onto the ball much, but Maxi's job was also to run deep. He really unsettled the opposing keeper before our second goal, allowing Amiri to slot it home.”
…about Wirtz's freekick goal: “He probably won't always hit it like that - it was a beautiful freekick. He wanted to shoot against Slovakia, but didn't do it then. He has a great feeling for those positions."
…about all the rotated players: “I'm delighted that we won the game with a back three. I'm pleased that Jamie [Leweling] played so well, he was extremely hard-working and always on the move - not everything worked out, but it doesn't always have to. All the players who came on did well, I'm very satisfied. We still have a lot of work to do in the upcoming games, but I'm happy with today's performance.”
…about the “return” to the three-back-formation: “We've been playing with a back three since March 2024, sometimes with three center backs and sometimes with a defensive midfielder. Today, the fans and journalists seemed to understand it, too.”
…about his team being whistled at at half-time: “Of course, I heard the boos at halftime - they don't do much good at that point in my opinion. But I also understand that people want more for their money and want to see good and attractive football - that can only happen together with the fans.”
…about Germany being worse after conceding: “I didn't think the game had turned around after we conceded a goal. We already felt that we were the better team on the pitch. We weren't able to get into the opponent's half as well as before, but after halftime it worked better again.”
…about whether Nagelsmann tries too many things: “The coach decides how much information he wants to give us and it's definitely not too much for us. We just have to make sure that we can implement the ideas well.”
…about the team's performance tonight in relation to their performance against Slovakia: “After Thursday, it wasn't easy; we were rightly criticized by the media. We addressed the problems well and also started the game well with a goal today - it was normal that we were a little shocked after conceding the goal. In the future, we need to find our way into the game through emotion and mentality better and then win games like we did today in the second half.”
