FC Bayern were beaten 5-4 away at Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday night's thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg. Harry Kane and Michael Olise scored for Bayern in the first half, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, João Neves and Ousmane Dembélé netting for PSG. Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé made it 5-2 after half-time, but Bayern fought back, and goals by Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz mean it’s all to play for in the second leg next week after the highest-scoring semi-final game in Champions League history
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Josip Stanišić, Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Díaz, Jamal Musiala and Olise, with Kane up front. Konrad Laimer replaced Davies at half-time, with Leon Goretzka and Nicolas Jackson taking over from Musiala and Pavlović late in the second half.
Bayern got off to the better start, but clear-cut chances were few and far between for 15 minutes. Bayern were awarded a penalty when Díaz was upended in the box, with Kane dispatching from the spot. PSG keeper Matvej Safonov only just denied Olise, but the pendulum swung the other way as Dembelé fired wide before Kvaratskhelia beat Neuer to level the scores.
Olise wriggled past two defenders before squaring, with Neves hitting his own post, but the latter soon did find the net with a header at the other end. Désiré Doué miscued before Olise hammered past Safonov to restore parity again. PSG were awarded a penalty for handball after review and Dembélé converted to restore PSG’s lead on the stroke of half-time.
It remained a high-octane affair after the restart as Díaz fired wide, but Achraf Hakimi’s low cross invited the unmarked Kvaratskhelia to fire inside the near post. The home side made it five three minutes later, Dembélé finding the net via the inside of the post after a break.
Bayern went looking for an answer and Upamecano diverted Kimmich’s free-kick into the back of the net. Díaz brought it back to 5-4 after taking down Kane’s sublime long ball, cutting onto his right and firing in. Tah saw a header saved before Senna Mayulu hit the bar as it remained at nine goals at the Parc des Princes and all still to play for in Munich in eight days.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Heidenheim in the Bundesliga. The second leg at the Allianz Arena is next Wednesday.
