Max Alleyne’s fantastic defensive performance, alongside Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Stephen Mfuni and Lakyle Samuel helped City hold out for a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim to see us advance to the UEFA Youth League quarter-final.

After taking the lead through a close-range Matty Warhurst strike before Hennes Behrens drew the hosts level, Reigan Heskey’s goal on the brink of half-time restored City’s advantage.

The second half saw Hoffenheim push for a second equaliser but our defensive line, along with support from the midfield and attacking players, held strong in one of our most difficult games of the season.

And at the heart of it was Alleyne who explained how he enjoys the European games the most in the calendar, with Hoffenheim’s resilience the latest example of testing the centre-back and helping him improve his game.

“I really enjoy it [difficult games],” began Alleyne.

“I’m playing with guys that I’ve played with a lot and so we’ve got such a good relationship and I feel so solid in the backline. We were unfortunate to concede a goal today but we still feel really solid.

“We know these games, the first 10/15 minutes are important and it’s key we stay in the game, stay aggressive and do everything with purpose. I feel like we did that well today.”

The triumph in Germany means City have progressed to this stage of the competition for the first time since 2017/18.

And we will travel to either Real Madrid or AZ Alkmaar for another difficult European clash.

But it’s a game Alleyne is looking forward to facing head on.

“We’re really excited,” said the 19-year-old.

“I think everyone is buzzing now and we just want to go through and showcase our best football.

“On our day we can beat anyone.”
