Ally McCoist has revealed details of a recent encounter with Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston, admitting he would not be surprised if the Canadian attracted interest away from the Hoops.

Johnston endured an injury-disrupted domestic campaign before returning to full fitness in time to feature for Canada at the World Cup, where they reached the last 16 on home soil.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a possible summer departure in recent weeks and is still awaiting his first appearance back in Celtic colours following his international commitments.

McCoist believes Johnston remains capable of taking the next step in his career and spoke highly of the defender after bumping into him while travelling back from London.

Speaking on Open Goal this week, he said: “I thought the big miss for Celtic last season was Carter-Vickers and Johnston, definitely.

“I actually met Alistair Johnston coming back up from London.

“He was struggling with injury and all that stuff, I think he was doon getting an X-ray, MRI or whatever it was. Blethering away to him.

“He’s an impressive individual, and I thought ‘Yeah, he could probably go again’.”
