Ally McCoist has tipped Leeds United striker Joel Piroe for a summer move to Rangers, with the forward’s future at Elland Road unclear after a difficult campaign.
"Joel Piroe would be a great signing for Rangers. I think he could certainly do a job up here. I think he'd adapt to this football as well." He was speaking to talkSPORT.
Piroe has slipped behind summer arrivals Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha in the striker pecking order. He has not started a Premier League match since August, has one FA Cup goal and has missed three penalties in regulation or shootouts.
Daniel Farke’s pursuit of another forward in January, evidenced by a bid for then-Wolves frontman Jorgen Strand Larsen, underlined the challenge for Piroe. Reinforcements are set to be revisited this summer and, should Leeds survive, his minutes could shrink further.
Links between the clubs may ease talks if Rangers explore a deal. 49ers Enterprises, in charge at Elland Road since 2023, also took control at Ibrox last summer, with Paraag Marathe initially vice-chairman before stepping down, and their position saw a January loan enquiry from Celtic greeted with bemusement.
Leeds paid £12m for Piroe, £10m plus a £2m promotion bonus to Swansea, amortised over a four-year contract from 2023, leaving roughly £3m book value. Any sale above that would count as PSR profit.
Despite limited starts, Piroe now has over a dozen Premier League appearances and won the 2024/25 Championship Golden Boot with 19 in 46. He made his Suriname debut in March, so an offer comfortably above that £3m benchmark could arrive.
