Almere City grabbed their first win in six games to boost their Eredivisie survival hopes. Their 2-0 win away to Willem II closed the gap to their opponents to six points with still plenty of games to play. Almere were certainly helped by Willem II’s striker Kyan Vaesan, who got himself sent off after just half an hour into the game. Canadian forward Charles-Andreas Brym grabbed his third goal since joining the club in the winter to open the scoring. Marvin Martins made it 2-0 and helped secure the side a crucial three points. There were a handful of moments where it looked like the side would have a chance to extend the lead from the spot, but VAR intervened.
For Willem II, this will certainly be a huge dent in the sides confidence going into the final games of the season. The side have not one a single game since December, a run that now extends to 10 games. With seven games to go, the side are in danger of being caught by Almere and Waalwijk, something that would see them return to the Dutch second tier just one season after winning promotion.
