Almere City have announced the signing of central midfielder Álex Balboa. The Equatorial Guinea international has signed a deal until 2026, with the club having the option to extend for an extra year. Balboa joins from Spanish side Alavés, leaving the club he came through as a youth product with his senior debut for the Alavés B side during the 2017/2018 season.
Balboa played 16 games for the senior Alavés side, with a loan spell at SD Huesca last season. Balboa played 14 games for the side in the Spanish second tier and scoring one goal. The 23-year-old has become a full international for Equatorial Guinea, joining a number of other players born in Spain who have been eligible to play for the African nation. He has made three appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, with a total of 15 games for the country.
Balboa’s contract with Alavés ended in the last few weeks, with Almere City able to pick him up on a free for the 2024/2025 Eredivisie season.
