Xabi Alonso has moved to keep Emanuel Emegha at Chelsea, shutting down a late-window loan as he shapes his 2026-27 plans.

Voetbal International reports that the 23-year-old drew widespread loan interest as the deadline approached, yet the head coach has ruled out an exit, a stance viewed as signalling a defined role for the Netherlands international in the coming months.

Chelsea have streamlined their frontline this summer, with Liam Delap joining Nottingham Forest and Nicolas Jackson moving to Aston Villa, leaving Alonso with a tighter group of forwards.

Emegha’s pre-season offered encouragement with goals against Crawley Town and Bromley before a hamstring issue kept him off the club’s tour of Australia and Asia. He was fit enough to make the bench in the Carabao Cup win over Luton Town.

Medical staff at Cobham have worked to resolve the muscle problems that disrupted last season. He missed nine games with a hamstring problem, then a muscle tear sidelined him for four months from December to April, 20 matches in all, before a dead leg ruled him out of the final four fixtures.

Alonso has also blocked loan avenues in Italy and Türkiye, keeping Emegha in West London as Chelsea juggle domestic and European commitments. The former Strasbourg striker could provide a different dimension alongside a Joao Pedro-led attack.
