Real Madrid’s season continues to be shaped as much by injuries as by tactics, and a new report from Defensa Central offers a clear insight into how Xabi Alonso views the situation.

It is said that the new manager is convinced that the return of key defensive figures could completely change the team’s outlook in the coming weeks.

Alonso believes that getting Eder Militao back, along with either Dani Carvajal or Trent Alexander-Arnold, would address two major weaknesses in the current squad.

Looking ahead, the feeling inside Valdebebas is summed up clearly by the coach himself, who believes that “They are key; the return of Militao and Carvajal or Arnold will give us a lot.”

Crucial players for Alonso

From a tactical perspective, the reasoning is simple. Militao offers pace, power and recovery speed at centre-back, qualities that are difficult to replace.

On the right side, both Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold bring experience, positional awareness and a high level of ball distribution, something that is currently lacking in Madrid’s build-up play.

For now, Alonso has been forced to improvise. Players like Federico Valverde and Raul Asensio have been used to plug gaps.

However, the drop-off is evident. Valverde, in particular, can perform at right-back, but it is not a natural position for him.

Even so, Alonso feels more secure when Valverde is available, as his physical output and intelligence still offer a degree of balance. But this is a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution.

Concerns about the physical condition

Beyond tactics, there is a deeper concern inside the club. Real Madrid are increasingly worried about the squad’s physical condition.

Injuries have piled up, and several players are dealing with ongoing discomfort. At present, fitness has become the club’s main issue, overshadowing even results.

Alonso was allowed to bring in his own coaching staff when he arrived, but questions are now being asked internally about the physical state of the squad.

Antonio Pintus remains at Valdebebas, though in a different role, and the current situation is causing understandable concern.
