Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso faced the media ahead of his side’s first match of 2026 against Real Betis, using the press conference to cover a wide range of topics, from injuries and squad planning to individual situations involving key players.
Alonso began by setting the tone for the restart of the season following the winter break.
Asked how he expects the match against Betis to unfold, the Real Madrid coach stressed energy and ambition.
“Happy New Year to everyone. After a week’s break, we’re eager to get back to competition and tackle the second half of the season with enthusiasm, excitement, and freshness. We want to play well and win.”
Attention then turned to the January transfer window and whether Real Madrid could look to strengthen.
“It’s our job to always be on the lookout, although we’re happy with the current squad,” he said.
One positive note was the return of Dani Carvajal to training.
Alonso provided an update on the defender’s condition before highlighting his importance beyond the pitch.

“He was able to train for the entire session. We will decide on the lineup tomorrow morning.”
He then added, “In every club, players who carry weight, not only because of what they contribute on the field, but also because they know how to deal with difficult moments, are necessary.
“Carvajal is one of them. His personality and influence on the team are enormous.
“We would have liked to have him around for these two months and now help him get into top physical shape to help the team. But just having him around helps.”
The situation of Kylian Mbappe was another key topic. Alonso explained that Real Madrid are trying to accelerate his return while still listening to the player’s body.
“We’re going to push the timeline. It’s mostly about how he feels. We’re going to do everything we can to push the timeline and get him ready as soon as possible. The Super Cup? We’ll see.”
On whether the injury was simply bad luck, he added, “After each game, we assess the situation and make decisions. Now we’ll see.
“We have to wait and see how things develop, and we’ll do everything we can to get him back as soon as possible.”
Alonso was also asked about Vinícius Jr., who was booed in the previous match against Sevilla.
“Vini looks fine to me, cheerful and smiling. The break has been good for all of us to recharge our batteries.
“Tomorrow, we’re the ones who have to give in order to receive, to spread that enthusiasm and rhythm that we need. If that flows in both directions, we’ll enjoy ourselves.”
On squad balance and creativity, Alonso remained pragmatic.
“I work with the foundation we have, with the roster we have, and it’s my job to get the most out of it.
“We’re still in the process, with good moments and not-so-good moments. And we’re always looking to improve, without naming names.”

The coach then addressed the loan departure of Endrick, explaining the long-term thinking behind the decision.
“At this stage of his career, he needs to play, and I understand that the club wants to invest in him in the medium term so that he can develop.”
“If that allows him to grow as a player… Madrid is doing very well. I understand Bobby and we will follow him very closely.”
When asked if it would have been better to delay the decision until after the Super Cup, Alonso was firm.
“We can’t just focus on the short term, but also on the medium term and when the talks take place.
“The decision has been made and there’s no going back. We will approach the Super Cup with a lot of confidence in the players we have.”
Finally, Alonso provided clarity on Dean Huijsen, who missed training.
“He was feeling some discomfort, and we wanted to be a little cautious. We’ll decide tomorrow,” he said.
