Martin Zubimendi was close to joining Liverpool in the summer of 2024 but remained in Spain, only to agree a move to Arsenal a year later. The Gunners pursued him from the start of 2025, and he joined at the beginning of this season, quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising imports.
The Spaniard has adapted well to life at the Emirates and has been a stabilising presence in midfield, helping Arsenal compete at the top of the league. His influence has contributed to the team’s strong start, and he could be in contention to become a Premier League champion in his first season in England. Arsenal are also chasing several other trophies, and Zubimendi’s consistency has been a key factor in maintaining its momentum across multiple competitions.
Zubimendi might not have ended up at Arsenal if Xabi Alonso had his way. When Alonso returned to Real Madrid, he reportedly sought to bring the midfielder to Spain, with the former manager hoping to hijack Arsenal’s move. Zubimendi reportedly sees Alonso as a mentor, and a move to Madrid could have appealed to him.

According to the Metro, Real Madrid ultimately rejected Alonso’s request, allowing Arsenal to secure Zubimendi’s signature. The decision has proven pivotal for the Gunners, as they have benefited from his reliability and composure in central midfield. Meanwhile, Madrid has struggled this season, leading to Alonso’s departure, while Arsenal and Zubimendi continue to enjoy a strong campaign in England.
Zubimendi’s arrival has strengthened Arsenal’s midfield, offering both defensive solidity and composure on the ball. His performances have been a crucial factor in the club’s competitive position, and his adaptation to the Premier League has been seamless. For Arsenal, securing a player of his quality has reinforced the squad’s ambitions, and Zubimendi looks set to remain a key figure for the remainder of the season.
