Real Madrid’s 2-1 home win over Alavés did little to diffuse the fallout from last week’s Champions League exit, as Alvaro Arbeloa again publicly backed Eduardo Camavinga.
According to L'Équipe, the coach restated his support after the La Liga match, days after the midfielder’s late dismissal against Bayern Munich was followed by Madrid’s defeat and elimination.
Before kick-off at the Bernabeu, Camavinga’s name drew jeers. He came on for Aurélien Tchouaméni on 63 minutes and was targeted again.
At full-time he circled the pitch, applauding and apologising to the supporters, who responded with applause.
Arbeloa underlined that Camavinga has been important in recent months and always adds something when he plays. He also praised the Frenchman’s strong personality and notable experience for his age.
The midfielder’s season has been hindered by fitness setbacks and heavier midfield competition, with 19 starts across all competitions. Arbeloa had said before the game that the player has his trust, the club’s backing and the fans’ affection, and that he hopes Camavinga stays for many years. Real intend to protect him, and for the second successive year they risk ending without a trophy.
