Amad Diallo Becomes Ivory Coast’s Youngest Ever World Cup Goalscorer

Amad Diallo has become Ivory Coast’s youngest ever World Cup goalscorer, netting a 90th-minute winner in Philadelphia to hand the Elephants a historic 2026 World Cup victory – their first at the tournament since 2014 and Africa’s first win of this edition.

Amad (23 years and 11 months old) came off the bench to break a stubborn deadlock against Ecuador, surpassing the previous record held by Bakari Koné. The goal also ended Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run across all competitions – a measure of the scale of Ivory Coast’s achievement on the day.

The match itself was tense and technically even, with both sides hitting the woodwork three times before Amad’s intervention settled it. Goal.com described him as having “proved to be the hero for Ivory Coast” with a “dramatic 90th-minute strike,” while Al Jazeera noted the goal was the decisive moment in what had been a high-quality, tightly contested encounter.

Amad Diallo at Manchester United

Amad has had an unconventional path to this moment. Having spent years out on loan – most recently at Sunderland – he forced his way into United’s first-team picture and delivered some of the club’s most important contributions last season before his form drew scrutiny heading into the summer. His last goal for United came in December 2023, alas, but his international record has been more consistent: five goals for Ivory Coast in that period, including three at the Africa Cup of Nations and a winner against France in a friendly.

There have been concerns raised about his output at club level, with Gary Neville among those questioning whether Amad has consistently hit the heights his talent suggests. On the biggest stage of all, those questions look rather different tonight.

What the record means for Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014, having missed both 2018 and 2022, and qualified for this tournament with an 8-0-2 record in CAF qualifying without conceding a single goal. Amad’s record-breaking strike now positions them strongly in Group E ahead of a second fixture against four-time world champions Germany in Toronto on 20 June – a match that will go a long way to determining whether this generation can reach the knockout stages.

It remains to be seen whether Amad carries this form into that Germany test, but on the evidence of Philadelphia, he has made himself central to Ivory Coast’s ambitions – and reminded anyone who needed reminding what he is capable of when the moment demands it.
