Riyad Mahrez and Amad Diallo were both on the scoresheet again in the African Cup of Nations.
Here’s all the latest AFCON match news from Morocco
Algeria secured their place in the last 16 of the competition thanks to a Riyad Mahrez penalty, which ensured a narrow win over Burkina Faso.
The north African side were out in the group stages of their last two AFCON campaigns but are off to a solid start in Morocco.
Mahrez’s goal is his third of the competition after he was on the scoresheet twice in their 3-0 win over Sudan last time out. Algeria next take on Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday in Rabat.
A huge early clash between two dominant African sides that will both have set their sights on going all the way this year ended in a stalemate.
Diallo opened the scoring after 51 minutes when he was found by Ghislain Konan with a cross-field pass before he curled a beautiful effort into the net from the edge of the box.
Despite the brilliance of Ivory Coast’s opener, they would not hold onto the lead for long and it was one of their own that would level the score.
Junior Tchamadeu’s strike was deflected into Yahia Fofana’s net by Konan, the player who had just provided Diallo with an assist five minutes prior.
Ivory Coast will face Gabon, and Cameroon are up against Mozambique on Wednesday as both sides look to secure their place in the last 16.
Mozambique edged past Gabon in a five goal thriller in Agadir to claim their first-ever win at AFCON in their history.
Goals from Faizal Bangal and Geny Catamo put Mozambique 2-0 up against Gabon before half time, but this lead was halved in the fifth minute of injury time at the end of the first-half, thanks to a tap in from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Diogo Calila restored Mozambique’s two-goal lead in the 52nd minute but the goal scoring was not over yet. Alex Moucketou-Moussounda got another goal back for Gabon with 15 minutes to go to set up a grand stand finish.
Gabon would end up failing to earn a draw, meaning they will have to beat the Ivory Coast to have any chance of getting through to the last 16.
Sudan became the second side of the day to secure their first-ever win at AFCON in their history as they edged past Equatorial Guinea.
Saul Coco’s deflection into his own net was the only difference between the two sides in a very tight match.
Sudan face Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea are up against Algeria in their final matches of the group stage on Sunday.
