Aston Villa's Amadou Onana is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The midfielder picked up the injury early into Belgium's round of 16 victory over World Cup hosts the United States, having to be replaced by Hans Vanaken in the 21st minute.

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku later paid tribute to his teammate when he netted the final goal in the 4-1 victory.

According to journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, Onana picked up a torn ACL that will see him miss a significant chunk of the 2026/27 season – a big blow for Unai Emery's side which could see them look to reinforce in midfield for the upcoming campaign.

Last season, Onana played 38 times for Aston Villa in all competitions, chipping in with two goals.
