Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana will miss nine months after surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
According to L'Équipe, the Belgium international underwent the operation in Lyon on Tuesday on his right knee and will now begin rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff.
Onana left the pitch on 7 July in Seattle after 20 minutes in Belgium’s 4-1 World Cup last-16 win over the United States.
Then head coach Rudi Garcia feared a serious injury at the time, fears that have since been borne out.
The procedure was performed at Hôpital privé Jean-Mermoz in Lyon by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet.
The 24-year-old has 33 caps and one goal for Belgium, and previously played for Hamburg 2020-2021, Lille 2021-2022 and Everton 2022-2024.
