The Portuguese Football Federation’s Refereeing Council announced on Wednesday, 11 March, that José Bessa will take charge of Arouca v Benfica on matchday 26 of the Liga Portugal Betclic.
Bessa, from the Porto association, will be assisted by Hugo Santos and Ângelo Carneiro. David Silva is the fourth official, with Pedro Ferreira as VAR and Nuno Eiras as AVAR.
Bessa previously oversaw Benfica’s 2-1 win away to Alverca, a match in which he dismissed right-back Amar Dedic for two bookings.
On 70 minutes of that game he whistled a foul by Dedic, then showed the red card for accumulation of yellows. The incident proved contentious, with head coach Bruno Lage criticising the performance, which led to a Disciplinary Council inquiry.
Benfica visit Arouca on Saturday, 14 March, with kick-off at 20:30 at the home of Vasco Seabra’s side.
