Amedspor have secured their first ever promotion to the Süper Lig after a 3-3 draw with Igdir on Saturday sealed second place in Türkiye’s second tier.
The run-in was patchy, with one defeat and four draws in their final five matches, and promotion was decided on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Based in Diyarbakir, known as Amed in Kurdish, a non-official language in Türkiye, the club is a symbol in the Kurdish-majority south-east.
“Amedspor is an identity, colours, values and stances,” club president Nahit Eren told AFP this week.
He denounced “attempts to involve Amedspor in various controversies”.
The club were sanctioned by the federation in late January after being accused of making propaganda for fighters, and it has faced insults from the stands on many away trips. Kurds make up about a fifth of the country’s 86 million people, and a slow peace process began in late 2024.
