América debut on hold for Miguel Borja, bench role possible against Puebla | OneFootball

Miguel Borja is Club América’s latest signing for the Apertura 2026 and Leagues Cup campaigns, but his debut will have to wait after he did not travel for Wednesday’s Leagues Cup meeting with Columbus Crew in Los Angeles. América tried to secure him six months ago, but financial differences blocked a deal. Cruz Azul were close to signing him, yet registration issues prevented it, so as a free agent he chose Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates, where he posted good numbers but never felt comfortable.

The Eagles have now signed him for an undisclosed fee on a one-year contract with an option for a further year, which could keep him at the club until mid 2028.

If all goes well, he could be on the bench against Puebla on Saturday. If América reach the Leagues Cup 2026 semi-final, he would also be available for that game.

Borja’s output has dipped in recent years, yet he remains a serious threat in front of goal, especially with headers, where he is considered lethal. He links play effectively and could combine with Raphael Veiga, his Palmeiras team-mate from 2017 to 2019.
