América’s goal drought matches 1970 low after three matches

Club América have opened the season with only two points from nine and, more tellingly, no goals, matching a negative mark last set in 1970. It is only the second such start in the club’s history.

They are the only Liga MX side yet to score, and no top-flight club worldwide remains goalless after three or more matches. Americayya.net notes the sequence echoes a drought just before a World Cup staged in Mexico.

Back in Mexico 70, América began with three games without scoring, losing 0-1 to Toluca, then 1-0 to Laguna, before a 0-0 with Pachuca. They finally broke through on matchday four, drawing 1-1 with Atlante through Juan Manuel Borbolla.

This season has followed the same pattern, a 0-0 with Xolos, a 0-2 home defeat to San Luis, then another 0-0 against Pachuca.

Next up is Necaxa at home on matchday four of the Clausura 2026. If they find the net, they would mirror the Mexico 70 timeline. If they draw a blank again, it would be unprecedented for the club, with Olimpia in the Concachampions and Monterrey on matchday five to come.
