Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin broke his silence amid a row over his form, then reacted to Samuel Soares on social media after being benched in the 6-1 win against Hearts.

According to Glorioso 1904, after the final whistle he posted on his channels that all supporters were happy and praised the team, a message interpreted as ironic following recent criticism and boos from Benfica supporters in the stadium.

Samuel Soares, 24 and a Seixal academy graduate, had been the surprise starter ahead of the 25-year-old Ukrainian international. He later thanked God for the opportunity and said he was chasing more on Instagram.

Trubin then replied on Soares’s post with two emojis, clapping hands and fire. An emoji he added after his own caption suggested he might have been referring to more than the result, possibly a veiled message to Benfica’s support.

After the match, Marco Silva said the decision to start Soares was his, describing it as competition between the goalkeepers, with Diogo Ferreira also in the frame. He added that the three must fight for the shirt and he will make the decisions.
