Ruben Amorim has admitted Thursday’s European semi-final is the focus for Manchester United after his side’s latest league defeat.
Manchester United lost 4-3 at Brentford in an entertaining encounter on Sunday. Mason Mount fired the visitors ahead on 14 minutes with his first goal of the season but Brentford bounced back almost immediately.
Mikkel Damsgaard’s effort deflected off Luke Shaw for an own goal for the equaliser, before Kevin Schade out Brentford ahead before half-time. Schade doubled his account after the break and Yoane Wissa made it four for a Brentford side well on top.
Late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo set up a nervy finish for the hosts, who held on to boost their hopes of European qualification.
Amorim’s priorities were evident with his starting side. With an average age of 22 years and 270 days, Manchester United’s starting XI was the third-youngest any side has ever named for a Premier League match. Amorim reflected on his side’s 16th league defeat of the season and admitted Thursday’s semi-final showdown with Athletic Bilbao is ‘more important’.
“We started well, we controlled quite well and then throw-ins and set-pieces was a problem for us, but that is normal for us because we didn’t have the height with the team,” Amorim said to Sky Sports.
“We fought back and we were near – we tried to push and in the end we lose.
“I have no doubt that we are playing better. So we have to take all the heat. At this moment we are losing games in the Premier League. We are fighting for the Europe league and Thursday is the most important game for us.”
