Amorim Confirmed as AC Milan Boss — United Face Him in August Preseason

Rúben Amorim has been confirmed as AC Milan head coach, ending his spell without a club since departing Manchester United in January, with the two sides set to meet in a preseason friendly in Wrocław on 15 August – giving the reunion an immediate and tangible edge.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Amorim has agreed a two-year deal with an option for a third season, at a salary of €3.5 million per season plus bonuses tied to trophy success and Champions League qualification. Gerry Cardinale, Milan’s owner, gave personal approval to the appointment – a signal that this was a top-level strategic decision rather than a purely technical one. Amorim is expected to travel to Italy in the coming days ahead of a formal unveiling, with his first preseason fixture reported by BBC Sport to be against Celtic on 25 July.

The preseason schedule then closes with the Manchester United friendly in Wrocław on 15 August – a fixture that now carries considerably more narrative weight than a routine summer workout. Amorim faces his former club just seven months after his abrupt exit from Carrington, a timeline short enough to make the occasion genuinely pointed for both parties.

Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season, missing out on Champions League places for the second consecutive campaign, and arrive at that fixture mid-rebuild. The United-Milan relationship has its own subplot running in parallel: as Stretty News has reported, United have confirmed interest in Rafael Leão, and those talks remain live. Whether Amorim’s appointment accelerates or complicates any Leão pursuit adds an additional layer of curiosity to what would otherwise be a standard preseason arrangement.

What Amorim’s appointment means for United’s accounts

The confirmation also has a direct and concrete financial consequence for the Reds. As Stretty News reported when Amorim’s departure was processed, United’s obligation to pay Amorim compensation ceases the moment he accepts a new managerial position. United had contracted him through 30 June 2027, per Gazzetta, and the club’s February accounts disclosed a maximum compensation provision of £15.9m.

The mitigation clause means that confirmation of the Milan role – rather than a prolonged search – stops the financial bleed at an earlier point than United might reasonably have budgeted for. Alas, the exact saving will depend on the precise cut-off terms written into the original settlement, but the direction of travel is unambiguously positive for INEOS as they manage a constrained summer transfer window.

Milan’s appointment also closes out a turbulent managerial cycle at the San Siro that ran through Stefano Pioli, Paulo Fonseca, Sérgio Conceição, and Massimiliano Allegri in relatively quick succession – suggesting the club views Amorim as a genuine reset rather than a stopgap.

It remains to be seen exactly how much of the £15.9m provision United will ultimately pay out, and how quickly the compensation cessation feeds through into INEOS’s working transfer budget ahead of the August window deadline.
