Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has said he saw improvement from his team despite the club’s opening weekend defeat to Arsenal.
Riccardo Calafiori scored the decisive goal at Old Trafford after Altay Bayindir’s error for Manchester United. The goalkeeper made a mess of a corner kick to hand Calafiori the simplest of headers from close range.
Amorim’s side were the better team for large periods of the game and forced David Raya into several smart saves for Arsenal. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both threatened on debut, with the former forcing Raya into a superb reflex stop.
United are aiming to rebuild from last season’s 15th-place finish, the club’s lowest of the Premier League era. Despite beginning the campaign with defeat, Amorim said there were plenty of positives. He praised the bravery of his team in and out of possession and said Manchester United ‘deserved more’ from the game.
“I’m really proud of the guys. They were really brave in everything they did during the game,” he said to Sky Sports.
“Congratulations for the performance. We deserved a different result and we need to move forward to the next one.
“We were more aggressive than last year. We went one against one all the game and we pressed high. We had quality with the ball. Even when the stadium made some sounds, we continued to play the way we play.
“You always feel in the game they can do something not just with the ball but without the ball. I am proud of the game we played. We lost and have things to work on.
“We need to win games but that was completely different to last season.”
