Alejandro Garnacho will look to build off his latest Manchester United performance.

The winger has been criticized as of late. Against Arsenal, however, the 20-year-old showed why some may be too soon to ship him out of Manchester. One good game in a draw won’t be enough to change minds.

He showed a strong willingness and resolve against the Gunners, which too often has been missing from the side.  It was a positive step forward for the Argentinian. At times, it was only he who looked capable of threatening David Raya or the Arsenal backline.

Inspired performance needs to be built upon

In truth, he was fairly unlucky to have not recorded an assist. His one-on-one ability nearly allowed him to find Joshua Zirkzee. Only the Dutchman’s flick failed to generate either the right angle or power to go past the keeper.

Garnacho then went on to find Matthijs de Ligt on a cross. The defender is good in the air, and this header also didn’t trouble Raya too much. Only a slightly different amount of force or point of the ball on contact would have seen a potential game-winner. Regardless, these moments illustrated how dangerous the attacking player was in advanced positions.

The ability to take players on while having the quality to create chances out of opportunities bodes well for the Argentina international moving forward. For too long, Man Utd have lacked the internal desire to take risks in the final third.

Coaches will often say that such attempts need to be calculated when displaying necessary creativity. Only in the case of United, the players as a whole seem to have lacked the spirit to even look goalward. Fans have experienced the frustration of a hopeful attack ending in a silly loss of possession or numerous pass-backs that end up finding the keeper.

After two of his better moments in the match, deeper into the second half, Garnacho put a shot over. The 90th-minute attempt frustrated a lot of spectators. His taking this chance is also a good sign, however.

Often, it takes individual brilliance and bravery to achieve something spectacular. Yes, in this case, there were passes that could have been made. It is a more encouraging sign, though, that the winger in that moment took the attempt.

Words from the Man Utd boss

Ruben Amorim spoke about the Argentinian’s performance. He had strong praise for the young player following Sunday’s draw.

Speaking after the game, the manager shared:

I think with Garnacho, and we’re always talking about Garnacho, he defended really well and attacked really well. I think it was the best game of Garnacho since I’ve been here. He’s improving, and we understood the plan quite well.

It can be too easy at times for fans, media, and pundits to critique player performances. Granted, that will always have its place in the sport. Rarely, however, do people outside of the locker room know what the players are being told.

Especially in today’s era, advanced scouting reports and analytics will have a number of aspects predetermined for those on the pitch to try to execute depending on the scenario.

What outsiders can always judge are effort and work rate. Here, Garnacho proved up to the challenge. The Man Utd put in a good shift, not only in the attack, but also in tracking back to protect his side of the pitch from Arsenal attacks.
