While a host of Manchester United supporters were hoping to see Chido Obi-Martin making his full debut against Real Sociedad, their hopes have been shattered due to a technicality.
The young Dane rose through the ranks of Arsenal before being poached by the Red Devils last summer. This season, he emerged as one of the most exciting young talents at the club, scoring 12 goals between the FA Youth Cup and the U18 Premier League.
So with Ruben Amorim’s squad lacking both quality and depth upfront, the 17-year-old was catapulted to the first team. He has thus made three cameos between the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Despite United’s elimination at the hands of Fulham on Sunday, Obi put on an encouraging display. He certainly proved to be an upgrade on the out-of-sorts Rasmus Hojlund who was cheered off the pitch by a section of the home supporters while making way for Chido.
After the contest, Amorim responded with a promising “anything can happen” when asked if the Denmark U18 starlet could replace his older compatriot in the coming fixtures. This answer was music to the ears of many Man Utd supporters who are eager to see more of the teenage sensation. Some were even counting on his presence against Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday.
However, these hopes will have to be delayed at least for next weekend, as Obi isn’t even on the Europa League list, as noted by Manchester World.
While one might think he would be available for the B-List (which can be alternated ahead of every fixture), that would be a misconception, since the young striker only joined Man Utd in the summer, so doesn’t fit the requirements of an academy product just yet.
Therefore, he could have only been eligible had the club added him to the A-list, but this wasn’t the case, perhaps because the technical staff hadn’t expected him to become a regular amongst the seniors at such a swift rate.
Hence, Man Utd have sadly deprived themselves from the services of their most promising youngster in the competition that represents their only chance to salvage this miserable campaign.
