Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu says he did not consider outside interest before committing to a four-year extension in June, keeping him at Elland Road until 2030. The 25-year-old had starred in Leeds’ first season back in the Premier League, starting 35 of 38 games, the most in the squad.
“Everyone could always get to a point where they might have some interest. But I wanted to renew here. I am very excited about where this club could go. I was focused on that rather than taking an interest in what else was out there.” He was speaking to The Athletic.
“It was never a forced conversation. It’s always quite an open dialogue. But it was a good, healthy conversation.”
Ampadu became the first signing under 49ers Enterprises after their 2023 takeover, and has been central to Farke’s plans. He took the armband in 2024 following Liam Cooper’s exit, and has been virtually ever-present in midfield when fit.
Promotion last year prompted doubts after a relegation season at Sheffield United, but those were answered as he went toe to toe with midfielders valued at least 10 times his £7million fee.
“I’ve played my best football but I’m hopeful the next four or five years are going to be better than the previous three years. The owners and investors are pushing really hard to take the club back to the heights of European football.”
