FC Bayern has already played its first preseason match of the new season, and there were some takeaways from the game. There were several interesting comments surrounding the match regarding the record champion’s roster, including some directed at Tom Bischof.
The U-21 national team player, who wasn’t part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the World Cup in North America this summer, not only prepared diligently for the new season but also scored the goal that tied the game at 1-1 against Wiesbaden in his first match after the summer break.
Although FCB lost 1-2, numerous young players took the field at the Pfalz. And Bischof, who came on as a substitute in the second half, showed some very promising signs.
In the new season, the midfielder—who arrived on a one-year loan from Hoffenheim and frequently played left back during his debut season—will take on a new role at Bayern. This was hinted at not only by his taking over the number 8 jersey from Leon Goretzka.
Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, was very impressed with Bischof. “His role will become even more important. We have high hopes and great confidence in him. He’s a really good player and will take on even more responsibility and get more playing time. I’m convinced he’s ready for it,” the Austrian told BILD.

The clear plan is for Bischof to play in the center much more frequently and to be the first choice as a substitute for Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic. While Konrad Laimer could theoretically play in midfield as well, the focus is on developing Bischof in this role.
There’s no doubt that Bischof has what it takes to succeed at FC Bayern in the new season. He’s technically well-trained, and his left foot is extremely strong. Now he just needs to consistently bring that to the field.
