Speaking at a press conference earlier today ahead of Real Madrid’s upcoming La Liga clash against Deportivo Alaves, manager Carlo Ancelotti let slip that key defender Ferland Mendy has signed a new contract with the club.

The 29-year-old left-back’s existing contract with Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2025 and as such talks over a renewal have been ongoing since the summer.

Reports of Mendy reaching an agreement over a new contract with the club emerged last week, with multiple reliable sources confirming that a renewal was sealed.

Now, Ancelotti has inadvertently let it slip that Mendy has indeed signed a new contract even before an official announcement has been made.

“We are delighted here, he has renewed his contract,” said Ancelotti.

Praising the French international for his performances, especially when it comes to defending, the Italian tactician added:

“He is doing very well. His defensive level is at a very high level. It’s not that he has difficulties on the ball, it’s just that I don’t ask him to do the job that other full-backs do.

“We have a very strong left winger, so there is no need to ask him to do a lot offensively. He could do it, but we don’t ask him to do it. It’s better that he stays at the back because sometimes he has to work at the back.”

While an official announcement is yet to be made, Mendy’s new contract with Real Madrid is expected to run until the summer of 2027.

Ancelotti has been a key figure behind the renewal, having made it clear to Los Blancos that he wanted to keep hold of the French international no matter what.
