Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti are preparing for one of the most important matches of the season.

It is no secret that following a disappointing 0-3 loss in the first leg against Arsenal, Madrid must produce a near-perfect performance at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, before thinking of mounting a comeback, the Italian faces two major selection issues.

Ceballos is the centre of attention

To begin with, Dani Ceballos is at the centre of it. The former Arsenal and Betis midfielder has recently returned from a lengthy injury and featured in Real Madrid’s league match against Alaves from the bench.

Although his return is a boost, there remains massive uncertainty over whether or not he is fully fit to start in such a match.

Since the turn of the year, Ceballos has become a crucial player for Real Madrid and there are stats to support that. However, given his physical stated, Ancelotti need to decide whether to risk starting him or to go with experience.

Rodrygo’s struggles open door for Brahim Diaz

Furthermore, the second selection issue concerns star forward Rodrygo. The Brazil international has struggled to find form in recent weeks and has scored just one goal in his last 18 appearances.

With his performances dipping, it is obvious to note that Ancelotti is thinking about leaving him on the bench.

However, it can be argued that Rodrygo could still feature as an impact substitute, especially considering his strong record in the Champions League.

In that case, if this happens, everything points to the fact that Ancelotti may decide to introduce him in the second half when the opposition starts to tire.

This means if Rodrygo is benched, the most likely replacement is Brahim Diaz. The Moroccan forward has been lively in his appearances this season and could complete a front three.

Ultimately, with Real Madrid needing to score at least three goals to take the match into penalties, Ancelotti’s selections could define the outcome of their European campaign.
