Carlo Ancelotti has managed to restore his reputation after guiding Real Madrid past Manchester City in the Champions League.

The Italian coach has faced a season full of ups and downs, often criticised for the uninspiring and unorganised football his team displayed in the early months.

At times, he was praised, but more often than not, he faced backlash due to Madrid’s struggles on the pitch. However, as 2025 unfolded, his team has improved, regaining the image of a true champion side.

Overcoming City has helped Ancelotti regain trust, even from those in Madrid’s inner circle who were the most critical of his methods.

The result led to a wave of praise, but Ancelotti himself has remained grounded, choosing to focus on the team’s progress rather than getting carried away with external approval.

The early signs

For months, it seemed as if his tactical instructions were falling on deaf ears. Yet, when pressure mounted and the situation became dire, he managed to get his players to respond.

Madrid have evolved into a team that is more compact, disciplined, and willing to work hard for each other.

Ancelotti has never shied away from criticism. He acknowledged the mistakes, recognised areas that needed improvement and despite setbacks, he continued to believe in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion.

The thorn in the side

Barcelona have been a major obstacle for Madrid this season, much like Atletico Madrid was last year. Hansi Flick’s team outplayed them in both league meetings and also denied them a shot at the Spanish Super Cup.

However, Madrid had already secured the European and Intercontinental Cups, keeping their hopes alive for more silverware.

There was growing concern that Madrid had been falling short in key fixtures, struggling against teams with similar ambitions.

Losses to Lille, Milan, Athletic Club, and both encounters with Barcelona had raised questions about their ability to step up in decisive moments. Failing to beat Atletico Madrid only fuelled further doubts.

Real Madrid are happy

After all this, though, eliminating Manchester City—regardless of the English side’s struggles—has allowed Ancelotti to reclaim his status as a top manager.

Madrid’s environment is once again embracing the Italian’s credentials, reminding everyone of his outstanding achievements.

His impressive career speaks for itself, and with this victory, he has silenced many of his doubters. As the season progresses, Ancelotti will look to build on this momentum and ensure that his team finishes on a high.
