Carlo Ancelotti took full responsibility for Real Madrid’s humbling 3-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals last night.
The Italian’s team was outplayed and overrun by Mikel Arteta’s side on Tuesday night, leaving the Merengues’ hopes of retaining the Champions League hanging by a thread.
And with La Liga also seemingly out of reach following the defeat to Valencia over the weekend, Ancelotti’s fate at Real Madrid now appears virtually sealed, reports journalist Rodra P (h/t RM4Arab).
Ancelotti has a contract with Real Madrid until the summer of 2026 but rumours of Xabi Alonso replacing him at the end of the current campaign have been doing the rounds for a while now.
But the manager has always held firm that he intends to stay at the club and see out his contract. However, such a possibility was tied in with him bringing trophies at the end of the season.

While it is not entirely impossible, despite the setbacks, Ancelotti still has a chance in all remaining competitions.
However, at the same time, it is also true that Ancelotti has not found the formula at any point this season – neither the tactics, nor the mentality, nor the overall impression have met expectations.
The team has not looked like a team at any stage this season when it was expected that Kylian Mbappe’s arrival would take them to the next level.
Given the situation, Real Madrid’s hierarchy began considering the end of Ancelotti’s cycle months ago, with the plan being to hand the reins to Alonso.
As is often the case at Madrid, this decision could have changed had Ancelotti won the major trophies in May.
However, after the heavy loss to Arsenal and a home defeat to Valencia in the same week, the Italian’s continuity now seems ‘practically impossible’.
