Liverpool are back on the grass, and so is the hard reality of a new cycle. Andoni Iraola faced the media for the first time at the AXA Training Centre and, for all the usual pre-season pleasantries, the key message was straightforward, the squad still needs work.
The new Liverpool head coach did not dress it up. Two signings are through the door, more are needed, and the club are active in the market. That is the headline as Liverpool gear up for the summer and try to sharpen a squad that faded badly last season.
Iraola said: “We’ve signed two players already we need more, we know this. We are working on this. As a coach I want the players here from day one, selfishly, but we know it doesn’t work like this, we’re working hard for those signings.”
That is honest and accurate. Managers want business done early, recruitment departments know it rarely happens that neatly. Liverpool are still moving pieces around, and the expectation is that activity increases once the World Cup reaches its conclusion.
The return of senior players this week gives Iraola a proper look at the group. Joe Gomez, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas are among those due back as pre-season steps up.
Iraola also made it clear he has already started the relationship-building process, both with players and staff inside the club.
He said: “I’m obviously trying to help also [with the signings].”
He added: “I spoke with the players at the World Cup Especially the ones who are eliminated, enjoying their holidays, I didn’t want to disturb them while it was ongoing but I had some good talks. I used these weeks before training to talk with a lot of people who work here every day. They create a good environment so our players can perform to the maximum.”
There is no mystery here. Liverpool need depth, they need options, and Iraola knows it. Pre-season starts the coaching work, but recruitment will shape how quickly his ideas take hold. For now, the message from the AXA Training Centre is simple, Liverpool are not finished in the market, and their new head coach is fully involved.
