Brazil’s sporting court handed down multiple rulings from Corinthians’ 1-0 win over Vasco da Gama at Neo Química Arena, suspending André Luiz for two matches and issuing club fines. According to Meu Timao, the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva delivered its decisions on Thursday.
André Luiz was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Thiago Mendes. He was found guilty under CBJD article 254, items I and II, for violent play, and will serve his ban in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Case relator George Suetônio Ramalho Júnior judged the act disloyal. Prosecutors cited a similar incident involving Flamengo’s Carrascal and argued this was more serious as Mendes was said to have suffered injury. Corinthians’ lawyer Sergio Engelberg said the midfielder went for the ball, had no violent history, Mendes continued, and the player did not contest the red. Video shown in the hearing was deemed decisive.
Corinthians were fined R$ 10,000 for delays in ball return by ball boys. Both clubs received R$ 3,000 penalties for a three-minute late kick-off under article 206.
Corinthians were cleared over a fan spitting towards referee Davi de Oliveira Lacerda after identifying the culprit and imposing a four-month stadium ban, a charge under article 213. They were also acquitted for showing “Itaquera virou baile” on the big screen under article 191, with the defence saying it referenced a Vasco chant about Philippe Coutinho in 2025 and drew no complaint.
Vasco were likewise fined for the delayed start. Mendes faced article 258 over post-match criticism of Davi Lacerda, a charge carrying up to six matches, and was acquitted by majority. Prosecutors have appealed for a one-match suspension, which remains under review.
